Smoke alarms don't have to be ugly. The Jalo Kupu 10, designed by Finnish designer Harri Koskinen, hides reliable optical smoke detection inside a soft, organic shape finished in dark grey fabric – so it looks like a piece of Scandinavian design rather than a piece of safety kit.
A sealed battery powers it for a full ten years, and the whole surface acts as the test button, which makes checking it simple for older relatives. It is a thoughtful housewarming gift and an easy way to add a stylish backup alarm where a mains system does not reach.
Perfect for everyday meals and smart enough for entertaining guests. It also makes a thoughtful gift for birthdays, housewarmings and 'just because' moments.
Wipe over with a soft, barely damp cloth and dry straight away. Avoid soaking, harsh detergents and scouring pads.

Old ones had started chirping on different nights, which is a special kind of misery. These are in and quiet. Test button is obvious, which the last set wasn't.

Landlord was replacing a dead alarm and didn't mind which, as long as it met the usual standard. This one doesn't shame the room. I'll be taking the idea with me when we buy.

Our hall is small and everything shows. This sits there without looking like a landlord special. Fitting was a rawlplug and ten minutes, and I'm not handy.
